I’m just back from a week in the desert. The Rub› al Khali is the largest sand desert in the world. The light and shadow play when at dawn and at dusk is absolutely amazing and it’s like visiting another planet instead of just another country… Here are some impressions of a surreal place — I hope I’ve managed to grab a little of this feeling in the photos I took…

Back from Tokyo

From Oct 31th till Nov 9th, I was lucky enough to take part in the iStockalypse in Tokyo. A 10 days event, organized by iStockphoto and Getty Images to produce stock photos for the Japanese market. Speedlight Horses

Shoot with horses and their people with studio lighting in a riding arena.

August was the big day: 24 people and 12 horses were waiting to be photographed. As I had never done such a thing before, I was looking at this event with a bit of mixed feelings. Would it work to light a fullsize horse with just a few speedlights? Of course, I did some research in advance, but couldn’t get a real feeling about how to cope with the dim light situation, the large areas to light up and the high speed of a moving horse. And not to forget: tripods, reflectors, umbrellas… A horse’s instinct says «WTF…» and would make it gallop away instantly. Finally, my concept was to use black fabric as a background and let some dim natural light come in from the side and from the roof of the riding arena. The plan was to establish a three point lighting which was capable for front– and side view shots (one LED light from the backside, a speedlight shot through an umbrella and 2 more speedlights shot into a large sunbounce reflector).
